Strangford Lough Regattas are run by the Yacht and Sailing Clubs situated around Strangford Lough, Northern Ireland.

It is the function of the Strangford Lough Regatta Conference, on which all the Yacht and Sailing Clubs of the Lough are represented, to co-ordinate, compile and publish a calendar of regattas and other events on Strangford Lough.
The PY handicaps for yachts racing in Regattas and other Events are adjusted and managed by the Strangford Lough Handicap Committee SLHC, which is the subcommittee of the SLRC. Handicaps are published on this web site which is regularly updated.
We must emphasise that the Strangford Lough Conference has no responsibility whatsoever for the running of the regattas and other events, and that each yacht and sailing club has the sole responsibility for the running of its own regattas and events.View Sailing Secretary and Handicap Committee Responsibilities

Formation and Topology

Strangford Lough is a large (150km2) shallow sea lough situated on the East Coast of County Down, Northern Ireland. The Lough's northern tip is only 6km from the outskirts of Belfast. About a third of the Lough is intertidal - best seen from the huge expanses of sandflats exposed at the Northern end at low tide.

This sea inlet emerged from under the melting ice-sheets of the Ice Age and is for the most part less than 10m in depth. There is a deeper Y-shaped channel (possibly an old river-valley or geological fault-line) up to 66m deep which extends from the Narrows up the central portion of the Lough The underlying rock is largely Silurian.
